Synopsis:

This zine is a fast response to a file released by the organisation Sex Matters summarising the UK Supreme Court’s clarification on 21 April 2025 that “sex” in the Equality Act 2010 refers strictly to biological sex male or female without any other definitions. Sex Matters advocates the view that there are only two biological sexes, a stance with far-reaching social and political consequences. Body politics is not a relic of the past, it is ongoing and relentless. In this zine, I briefly lay out key historical moments, from witch-hunts to the criminalisation of gay lives, from LGBTQ+ resistance to today’s policy shifts, to show how the control of bodies, especially those that don’t conform, remains central to state power.
